How much does a smog check cost at Star Smog?

Our smog check starts at $39.75 for most vehicles (2000 and newer). There is an additional $8.25 certificate fee if your vehicle passes. Vans, trucks, and SUVs are an extra $10. Heavy-duty and exotic vehicles may have an additional charge.

Do you offer a smog check coupon or discount?

Yes. We offer a discount smog coupon available on our website. You can present the coupon on your mobile phone or print it before your visit. The coupon is valid Monday through Friday and cannot be combined with other offers.

What is a STAR smog station?

A STAR station is certified by the California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) to perform smog checks on vehicles that the DMV specifically directs to STAR-certified stations. Star Smog is a STAR Certified test-only station, authorized to perform all types of DMV smog inspections.

Do I need a STAR smog check?

If your DMV renewal notice specifies that you must visit a STAR station, then yes. Vehicles flagged by the DMV for emissions issues or randomly selected for testing must go to a STAR-certified station like Star Smog. Check your DMV notice for instructions.

Does the smog station send results to the DMV electronically?

Yes. Star Smog electronically transmits your smog certificate directly to the DMV at no additional charge. You do not need to mail anything. The DMV typically receives the results within minutes of your test.

What documents do I need for a smog check?

Bring your vehicle, your DMV renewal notice or registration card, and a valid form of payment. If you are getting a change-of-ownership smog check, bring the vehicle identification number (VIN). No additional paperwork is needed.

What happens if my car fails the smog check?

If your vehicle fails, we provide a detailed diagnostic report explaining the reason. Since we are a test-only station, we do not perform repairs. After you have your vehicle repaired at a qualified repair shop, you can return to Star Smog for retesting.

Will a check engine light cause my car to fail smog?

Yes. If your check engine light (MIL) is on, your vehicle will automatically fail the smog check. Have the issue diagnosed and repaired before coming in for your test. The light must be off and all emission monitors must be set to pass.

How long does a smog check take?

A typical smog check at Star Smog takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Most vehicles are completed quickly, and you are welcome to wait in our comfortable waiting room during the test.

Do I need an appointment for a smog check?

No. Star Smog accepts walk-ins during all business hours. No appointment is necessary. Simply drive in during our operating hours and we will take care of you.

Do you test diesel vehicles?

Yes. Star Smog performs diesel smog checks for diesel-powered cars, trucks, and SUVs. Diesel vehicles may have an additional $10 testing fee.

Do hybrid vehicles need a smog check?

Yes. Hybrid vehicles that are eight model years or older are required to pass a smog check in California. Fully electric vehicles (EVs) are exempt from smog testing. Star Smog can test all hybrid vehicles.

Can you smog RVs and motorhomes?

Yes. Star Smog tests RVs, motorhomes, and other large vehicles. Additional fees may apply depending on the vehicle type and size.

Do I need a smog check for an out-of-state vehicle?

Yes. If you are registering a vehicle in California that was previously registered in another state, a smog check is required. Star Smog can perform out-of-state vehicle smog inspections.

What year vehicles are exempt from smog checks in California?

Vehicles that are model year 1975 or older are exempt from smog checks in California. Newer vehicles eight model years old or less are also exempt from biennial smog requirements, but a smog check is still required for change of ownership or initial registration.

What is a change of ownership smog check?

When you sell or buy a vehicle in California, the seller is required to provide a valid smog certificate to the buyer. This is called a change-of-ownership smog check. Star Smog can perform this inspection and electronically transmit the certificate to the DMV.

How should I prepare my car for a smog check?

Drive your vehicle for at least 15 to 20 minutes before the test to warm up the engine and catalytic converter. Make sure the check engine light is off, your gas cap seals properly, and there are no visible exhaust leaks. Check that your tires are properly inflated.
